The festival @ LUNCH : Themes and Variations

Australia

A recital for solo violin that illustrates how themes and variations occur not only within, but also between works written many centuries apart. This program centres on two pairs of pieces, one half a cornerstone of the Baroque repertoire and the other a twentieth century reflection on each. Australian composer Julian Yu was inspired directly by Biber’s Passacaglia while Korean/German composer Isang Yun drew on Bach’s theme from ‘A Musical Offering’ for the Königliches Thema. With the Passacaglia and Chaconne both being sets of variations over a bass ostinato, this program is most certainly a celebration of themes and their variations.

Julian Yu: Passacaglia after Biber
Isang Yun: Kőnigliches Thema (Australian premiere)
